Sometimes a river receives a lot of extra water. When this happens, the water overflows from its normal path in the riverbed and possibly onto dry land. This is called flood.
Durinng a flood, people should move themselves and their most precious belongings to higher ground quickly. The process of leaving homes behind in search of a safe place is called evacuation.
During a flood there is plenty of water, but it is mostly polluted and not safe to drink. If people drink the dirty water, they may suffer from illnesses or diseases such as typhoid and cholera. People can get ready to survive a flood by filling many containers with fresh and clean drinking water and using sandbags to store food ore protect their house because sandbags soak up water.

What’s a Drawback?

The first part of a tsunami to reach land is known as drawback, rather then a wave crest. The water along the shoreline recedes dramatically, exposing usually submerged areas.
A drawback generally occurs besause the tectonic plate on one side of the fault sink suddenly during the earthquake, causing the overlaying water to flow outwards with the trough of the wave at its front. This is why there would not be any drawback when the tsunami travelling on the others side arrive ashore, as tectonic plate is “raised” on that side of the fault line.
Drawback starts to begin before the wave arrives at an interval equal to half of the wave’s duuration. If the slope of the coastal seabed is small, drawback can extend up to hundreds of metres. People who are unaware of the danger sometimes remain near the shore to satisfy their curiosity or to collect fish from the exposed seabed.
